Aim: This module introduces students to feminism, its origins, politics and key features. It examines the concept of gender. It explores how gender operates in education (particularly in school settings), both within the hidden and overt curriculum and aims to get students to reflect on their own practices and institutional locations.
Content:
Students will engage with theories of gender and sexuality in relation to education and schooling, critically consider gendered practices in schooling that produce inequalities and violence and reflect upon their own socialisation and educational experiences and practices and consider possible practical strategies to foster gender equality.
Outcomes:
Students should be able to:
· Demonstrate familiarity with key concepts of gender as a social construction and of gendered subjectivities through the everyday experiences in their institutional locations.
· Reflect on their own educational experiences at school as learners and teachers and make connections to how their experiences both challenge and disrupt gender norms.
· Demonstrate an understanding of the major theories of gender and sexuality in relation to schooling.
· Apply their knowledge of gender and sexuality to make connections to gender violence in educational institutions.
· Use oral and written communication skills to make arguments, examine evidence and creatively advance this field of inquiry
· Work collaboratively to identify a gender issue and develop a creative awareness intervention
