In 2024, MECS301: Advanced Cultural Studies will look at documentary film as a cultural artefact and medium of representation. The module also has a practical component that allows students to create their own film document in the form of a 'cellphilm'.

Mecs704 introduces you to critical issues and qualitative methodologies for Media and Communication Research. You learn how to design a doable, robust plan for a small scale qualitative study, from brainstorming, framing in relation to existing relevant theory and research, research methodology and data generation and collection, analysis and interpretation and how to write up coherent research report.

The purpose of this module is to equip students majoring in the Discipline of Management and Entrepreneurship with a sound understanding of the fundamental principles underlying the crafting, executing and aligning of business strategies.
The focus of this course will be on four critical areas: the scope and dynamics of strategic management; concepts and analytical tools; crafting a strategy to create sustainable high performance; and executing and aligning the strategy.
Students will be exposed to the latest developments in the field of strategy that will equip those wanting to enter postgraduate studies and those seeking employment in businesses management or consulting with the requisite knowledge and analytical skills.
2. MODULE OBJECTIVES
On completion of this module, students will be able to
1. Understand and describe the process of strategic management.
2. Evaluate the external environment and its impact on a company’s strategy.
3. Evaluate a company’s resources and competitive position.
4. Understand and describe the five generic competitive strategies and how they are utilised by business leaders.
5. Understand and describe the strategies used in emerging economies.
6. Understand and describe the strategies used in specific industry and company situations.
7. Understand the role of enterprise performance management in successful strategy execution.
8. Recognise and understand the importance of building an organisation capable of good strategy execution and alignment.
9. Understand how leadership, culture and teamwork impacts on a company’s strategy.
10. Understand how ethics and corporate governance impact on a company’s strategy.
