This course aims to introduce students to the field of Organisational Development as an applied behavioural science discipline that is dedicated to improving the effectiveness of individuals and groups within organisations using both the theory and the practice of planned change. The module aims to provide students with a conceptual framework of the underlying principles, theories, values, beliefs, and assumptions of Organisational Development to understand why and how individuals, groups and organisations must adapt to their constantly changing local and global environments to survive and prosper.
Given the unique context of South Africa which has been informed by its turbulent past, the module is taught with the assumption that many Eurocentric approaches to Organizational Development do not adequately consider context-based approaches that address the specific needs of South African organizations. The module is thus taught using a critical perspective to understanding Organizational Development as a science that is both theoretically and practically significant with the local context. Students are encouraged to think critically and to reframe and reconstruct taken-for-granted worldviews which reinforce western dominance. Local context is situated at the centre of teaching and learning.
This module attempts to contextualize knowledge production (science) and its’ application in relation to organizations and workers. Student’s will be exposed to various theoretical models of change and historical details that forefront a contextual understanding of change.
In doing so, the module attempts to undertake a systemic understanding of organisations. The module considers the various domains with which organisations intersect (for example, the political, economic, and social domains) and how these intersections, in turn, impact on organisational functioning.

Welcome to the PSYC322 Neuropsychology Class of 2024
Dear Students,
Welcome to the PSYC322 Neuropsychology class of 2024! I am Miss Khanyisile Nene, and I am thrilled to be your coordinator for this fascinating journey into the intricate world of neuropsychology.
Module Description, Aims, and Objectives
As we embark on this intellectual adventure, I want to give you an overview of what to expect throughout this semester. This course will dive deep into the complexities of brain-behaviour relationships, offering you a comprehensive understanding of neuropsychology.
Module Objectives
- Investigate Historical Influences: We will explore the history of neuropsychology and understand the pivotal moments and figures that shaped this field.
- Anatomical and Neural Basis: You will delve into the anatomy and neural foundations of the nervous system, gaining a clear picture of its structure and function.
- Normal and Injured Brain Functioning: Our studies will cover both the normal functioning brain and the cognitive, behavioural, and emotional consequences of brain injuries or damage.
- Brain Development: From conception to adulthood, we will examine how the brain develops, the impact of teratogens, and how various psychological processes and disorders can be explained through the nervous system's functioning and chemistry.
Module Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- Understand Brain-Behaviour Relationships: Demonstrate a deep understanding and appreciation of the complex assumptions underlying the relationships between the brain and behaviour.
- Normal and Diseased Brain Development: Understand how a normal brain develops and articulate what happens when the developing brain becomes injured or diseased.
- Brain-Mind Interface: Explore and comprehend the interface between the brain and the mind through an in-depth study of brain structures, systems, and functions.
This course is designed to challenge and inspire you, pushing the boundaries of your understanding of neuropsychology. Stay curious, engage actively in discussions, and always strive to connect the dots between theoretical knowledge and real-world applications.
I am looking forward to a semester filled with discovery and growth. Let us begin this journey together, aiming for excellence and a deeper understanding of the human brain and its profound impact on behaviour.
Best regards,
Miss Khanyisile Nene

Psychopathology (PSYC341)
This module is an
elective for students registered for level 3 General Psychology. The aims of
this module are:
- To expose students to various psychological disorders and address cultural considerations in terms of classification and diagnosis.
- To critically examine psychological disorders' epistemological and aetiological issues using the biopsychosocial model.
- To provide an in-depth understanding of various psychological theories or perspectives and their application to psychopathology.

The aim of the module is to introduce students to the study of the human spirit and human behavioural phenomena from an African perspective. The module highlights the inadequacies of Western Psychology as it relates to African people and how it lacks relevance to Third world issues because of its individualistic orientation. Western Psychology assumptions and theories are questioned and the spiritual, mental, and physical interconnectedness of African reality is emphasised. The development of the ‘African self’ and the role of community on development are also explored.
