AIM OF THE COURSE This an advanced study of Christian DOCTRINES: Its aim is to explore the historical background and current debates on the doctrines. The module will help students to make a connection between how the doctrines were developed and the current contextual understanding of these doctrines |
COURSE OUTCOMES
Knowledge/Skills
- Develop a comprehensive understanding of the concept of the doctrines of God sin and salvation and church at an advanced stage
- Critically engage in the debates around the history and development of these doctrines
- Analyze the foundational sources and theories used to develop arguments for and against each doctrine.
- Construct a clear and coherent argument in dialogue with scholarly debates around these doctrines
- Relate all academic arguement to the African context.
Attitudes and Values
- to acknowledge the place of difference in our understanding of the doctrines
- Appreciate the development that has taken
place in the discussions of these doctrine
COURSE EXPECTATIONS
a) Attendance and participation in all classes.
b) 2 short essays 60% each essay carries 30%
c) final assessment 40%

Essay no. 1 (1200 words)
Due date: 19th April 2024
The current cyclones and floods that have also affected some parts of Africa have caused a lot destruction to humanity and nature to the extent that some people have began to question God’s love for humanity. Using your understanding of the doctrine of God OR Salvation write a paper where you will show the biblical principles Either the doctrine of God or doctrine of Salvation. Your paper must also identify some of the current debates on these doctrines.
Essay no 2 (1200 words) choice one out of the two essays
Due date 4th June 2024
- Discuss how the concept of sin and salvation is understood in your church/community and compare that with the Biblical principles.
- Using the models of church outlined by Dulles write a short essays showing how each of these models can be applied in our current society

This module develops the fundamental methods and competencies to interpret the Bible, employing the Tripolar Method of biblical interpretation. Furthermore, this module provides advanced, in-depth and detailed analysis of the three primary components of African biblical interpretation: the biblical text, the African context, and the mediating ideo-theological framework. Students will develop competencies of using this method and the tools employed, in order to read texts within their contexts. The module will develop students’ competencies to use critical methods of analysis of the Bible, reading the Bible in context and the hermeneutical resources available to engage with the African contexts.
