Aim:
To introduce petrological fundamentals & tools
required for description, analysis and interpretation of metamorphic rocks.
Fundamentals;
- The original
nature of the rock (i.e., was it sedimentary or igneous or metamorphic,
what type of sediment, i.e., calcareous or clastic, psammitic or pelitic
etc.). NB!!The original nature of the rock controls the composition.
- The
pressure-temperature conditions of formation or grade of metamorphism,
- The resultant
mineralogical, fabric and micro-textural changes
- Type of
metamorphism and related processes
Your objectives should be;
- To be able to
describe, classify and discuss the origins of any metamorphic rocks you
study after you have finished the course.
- Understanding
metamorphic rock’s compositional variations with respect to changes in
metamorphic grade and metamorphic facies
- Metamorphic
rocks and plate tectonics
- Have fun,
loosen up (remember this is not an army camp)
Notice what are NOT objectives:
- You do not need to remember all facts and
theories about metamorphic rocks. (You can look them up in books, the
trick is knowing where to find them).
- You do not need to speak perfect English. We are
studying science, not English. (There’s no need then to be afraid of
interacting with me during or outside of lectures)
- You do not need to know everything in the
Metamorphic Petrology book but knowing the fundamentals and correct use of
terminology is important.
