The module covers the contexts of sustainable development in general and specifically sustainability in management. The focus is critical management theory and the norms and instruments used in the contexts of ecological and social sustainability.
This module is envisaged to engage critical and reflective thinking around issues of sustainability in management. Students are provided with both a theoretical foundation and a practical context in which to implement sustainable management.

ThesisLab is a unique interactive online learning lab that is available to all academic staff and postgrad students at UKZN. ThesisLab can be used:
By students- to find, learn, and even curate content on research
- to learn-by-doing as you create a draft of your research
- to get access to support from your supervisor and other students
By lecturers/supervisors
- to teach an introduction to research methods
- to supplement an existing research methods course
- to communicate, monitor, and provide additional content to students
ThesisLab includes six different spaces
My Lessons - Learn: A complete research course based on a book
My Toolbox - Discover: A searchable/customisable toolbox of lessons
My Journal - Reflect: A guided space to help reflect on the research
My Notes - Organise: A space to store notes, documents, ideas, etc.
My Workbench - Develop: A guided workbench to develop a draft thesis
My Class - Connect: A support space to share content, interact, etc.
How to Register on ThesisLab
- Students
- Group Enrolment: Select Self Enrolment (Student) and enter the enrolment key provided by your lecturer. This will ensure you are enrolled in the correct group
- Non-Group Enrolment: Only choose this if your lecturer has not provided you with a group enrolment key. Select Self Enrolment (Student) and enter the enrolment key "ThesisLab12#" (case sensitive)
- Lecturers
- Select Self Enrolment (Lecturer) and enter the enrolment key "UKZN-lecturer-2024" (case sensitive)
- Lecturers/Supervisors can activate the “My Class" space to manage, communicate, and monitor your students. This space enables you to communicate with your students, upload additional content, and allow your students to submit drafts of their work. To activate "My Class", please submit your details via this form to indicate the number (and names) of the groups you want created.
