The module BIOL712 Parasitology will intensify knowledge in parasitology through self-study under guidance. Participants will learn about specific topics that currently are of high interest. Participants will select a recent scientific publication (provided) and make an initial presentation, prepare a draft essay (marked), make a final presentation (marked) and submit a final essay (marked), the latter will be internally and externally evaluated.
Aim: To provide an overview of important aspects of parasitology that are currently being debated in the literature.
Content: A selection of publications published in high-tier scientific journals covering topics like
1. Evolution of resistance against anti-parasitic treatments,
2. Evasion of host immune response,
3. Climate change and parasites,
4. Use of genomics/genetics to unravel parasite history,
5. Parasite manipulation of the host,
6. Microbiome-parasite interactions,
7. Parasites and spatial ecology of hosts,
8. Parasite behaviour and interactions with their hosts, and
9. Parasite control strategies.

Aim: To provide an understanding of biological invasions and the management of alien invasive plants, in particular the initiation and management of a biological-control programme against an alien weed.
Content: Theory and practice of biological weed control in the context of integrated weed management. Targeting a weed for biological control. Analyzing the risks of releasing a new biological-control agent. Motivation, design and budgeting of a research programme targeting a new weed for biological-control.

Sanibonani! Dumelang!
This module introduces students to a variety of biblical genres and the diverse ways in which the Bible is used within popular culture, focusing on how Old Testament(OT)/Hebrew Bible(HB) narratives, specifically the Pentateuch and the Book of Esther, are interpreted through narrative theory, art, political speeches, and film.
This year, we will begin with a general overview of the first five books of the OT/HB, known as the Pentateuch. We will cover themes such as leadership, human sexuality, land, gender, politics and the economy in the OT/HB through the medium of narrative interpretation and popular culture. The study of the Pentateuch will take us through the first half of the module. In the next 2nd half of the module, we will apply narrative theory to interpret the book of Esther, examining various issues such as power and gender. We will critically evaluate popular culture related to the book and interact with relevant scholarly articles.
Your lecturer for this module is Rev Mantima Thekiso and I look forward to interacting with you in class!!
We meet every Tuesday at 15:05-15:50 in room 216, Thursday at 10:30-12:10 and Friday 08:40-09:25.
See you in class!!

This
module is intended for students in the final year of their undergraduate degree.
It provides a detailed and in-depth analysis of biblical texts within their
Ancient Near Eastern (ANE) and Graeco-Roman contexts. In addition, it will examine
how the Bible has been interpreted within different contexts throughout history,
e.g. in the Septuagint and early Christian fathers, focusing on African receptions
and interpretations. It is also a core
module for those majoring in Biblical Studies. The module consolidates
the academic competencies and skills acquired at levels one and two of undergraduate
studies. This year, the module will focus on the Genesis 1–3 text.
