Dear Student,
Congratulations on making it to Year 2 of your undergraduate university studies, and welcome to CHEM230. We urge you to double the effort you put into your work in Year 1, as Year 2 might be a bit more challenging.
With Dr. PB Gumbi and myself, Prof. BO Owaga (module coordinator), you are in very capable hands that should comfortably see you through the module. Some tips that I have seen work for most students in this module include:
- Joining small study groups (of about 4 to 5 students),
- Keeping up with the lecturer and not leaving material for the last minute,
- Attending lectures and tutorials regularly, as these allow you to interact with your lecturer.
You will be informed in class and via email as to when practicals will commence. Make sure to collect your laboratory manuals from Mr. Brian Ndlovu (our PHYSCHEM technician) from the PHYSCHEM laboratory on Level 2, preferably in the first week of the semester (week beginning on the 22nd of July). For the practicals, you will need to A4 Quire books that you will be using in alternate weeks.
You will be given an introductory lecture during the first lecture of the module. A video titled “Important Information About Practicals has also been prepared for you and will be available on Learn2024.
Should you have any queries, you may contact the module admin person at CTO, or myself, and in the future through the class rep whom we'll appoint in the first week.
Best wishes,
BO Owaga- Teacher: Bhekumuzi Prince Gumbi

1CHEM241 (2024)
Applied Organic Chemistry for Chemical Engineers
School of Chemistry and Physics
Howard College, University of KwaZulu-Natal
Course background and purpose
This module is required for a degree in Chemical Engineering. Chemical Engineering students take it at level two. The important aspects of organic chemistry, including the reactions of aliphatic/aromatic functional groups, spectroscopic methods and synthetic polymers, are covered in this module.
Module Details
Module Coordinator/Lecturer: Prof Vincent O. Nyamori (nyamori@ukzn.ac.za)
Module Administrator: Ms Silindile Promise Soni (Sonisp@ukzn.ac.za)
Module Name: Applied Organic Chemistry for Chemical Engineers
Module Code: CHEM241 H1
Prerequisite
You are assumed to be fully familiar with all the content in the first-year Chemistry modules CHEM161 and CHEM171. Please note that NOT all the material to be covered is available in the textbook or notes provided on the Chem241 Learn website; therefore, attending lectures is crucial.
Course content:
· Aromatic Compounds: aromaticity, reactions of benzene and substituted benzenes
· Polymer Chemistry: classifications and synthesis
· Spectrometry and Spectroscopy: mass spectrometry, infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet/visible spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy
· Amino acids, Peptides and Proteins: structures, naming and synthesis
